Hearts & Minds Philosophy

Play is central to healthy development
Young children have an innate drive to discover their world through play and are active participants in their own learning. My role as educator is to intentionally create an environment in which little scientists can explore and discover their world safely and with support. I value the natural environment and believe in providing open ended ‘loose parts’ that nurture children’s curiosity and inspire thinking and problem solving. I believe in supporting children in taking calculated risks in their play adventures and giving them a sense of wonder and challenge.

Care and education are inseparable
I take a holistic approach to early education, seeing young children as competent and capable and nurturing their hearts as well as minds. Children learn their values through the way they are treated; therefore respect is the most vital element in raising the next generation. Respect is demonstrated by trusting even the youngest children to develop in their own individual time and way, valuing their unique personalities, giving them opportunities to make choices in matters that affect them and really hearing and appreciating their ‘voices’ and opinions. This means going slow and being present and mindful with children ensuring quality interactions.

Relationships are key
In order for children to thrive they must first feel safe, seen, soothed and secure therefore building relationships is my main priority. Through meaningful relationships in a democratic community (in which everyone has a say), children develop independence, empathy and co-regulation. Intentional teaching moments arise in daily routines and through playful experimentation we co-construct knowledge together.
I truly value families as children’s first and most important educators and aim to work collaboratively in partnership with them becoming part of their ‘village’.
